Team debate Tuesday

Topics of debate

What is a team debate? The main purpose of a team debate is to discuss the pros and cons of an idea. A chairperson controls the actual debate and makes sure members of each team stick to the rules. Each team tries to convince the audience that their arguments are the best. The team members take turns talking and should keep in mind what has just been said by the opposing team and try to connect to this. In this way the debate becomes a dialogue between those who are for and those who are against the topic currently discussed. (Source: Blueprint A by Christer Lundfall)

Here are this year's topics. The class will be divided into two groups where one group is doing team debating and the other group is preparing for something else. Your group will have the chance to choose two out of the following four topics to be discussed:

1) Abortion - Should abortion be permitted? Background research could be made here.

2) Should examinations be replaced with other forms of assessment? Read about this here.

3) Should assisted suicide be legalized? Euthanasia. Background reading given here.

Read and inform yourselves on the two topics of your choice. Consider both pros and cons, you will never know which role in the discussion you are to take until we start in class.

It's all Beer and no Books

For today, Tuesday 6 October, you are supposed to have learnt the words for chapter: It is all Beer and no Books. Learn the words the way you usually do and then test yourself on the words via this link: http://quizlet.com/1227502/it-is-all-beer-and-no-books-flash-cards/.

Quizlet is a marvellous study tool where you can test your vocabulary development online. I have typed in your glossary list and out comes a digitally generated exercise which will allow you to learn and practice and play games with.

Start by using "Familiarize" to brush through the words again, then use "Learn" and thereafter "Test". Towards the end you can play scatter and spacerace with the words

Good luck and enjoy learning words!
